More Than a Name: The Story Behind Trade Eights

People often ask us where the name Trade Eights comes from. The answer starts with jazz, but it doesn’t end there.

In jazz, trading eights is an improvisational tradition where musicians take turns playing eight bars at a time. One musician offers an idea. Another responds. Then another. No one is trying to overpower the room or steal the spotlight. They're listening, building on one another's ideas, and creating something together in real time. It's less about performance than conversation.

When we were naming our company, that idea stuck with us.

Because when you think about it, the best cocktails work the same way.

They create space for conversation.

Throughout history, music, food, and a good drink have naturally belonged together. Whether it was neighborhood jazz clubs, family celebrations, backyard barbecues, or the local pub, people have gathered around a table with something in their glass while stories are shared, friendships grow, and memories are made.

The cocktail isn't the destination.

It's the invitation.

At Trade Eights, we've always believed the drink should support the moment—not dominate it. That's why we focus on real spirits, real juices, balanced recipes, and cocktails that feel just as at home around a record player with a few friends as they do at a backyard gathering or dinner party.

The name reminds us of what we're really trying to create.

In jazz, everybody "wins" when musicians trade eights. The music gets better because everyone contributes. Each musician listens before responding. Every phrase leaves room for the next.

That's the kind of moments we love.

The best evenings aren't remembered because of one perfect cocktail. They're remembered because someone stayed longer than planned. A conversation went somewhere unexpected. New friends were made. Old friends laughed until closing time. The music kept playing.

Cocktails have always helped bring people together—not because they magically create connection, but because they help us slow down long enough to enjoy it.

That's why music has always been part of our brand. It's why you'll find playlists on our website. It's why so many of our favorite memories involve good records, good company, and a drink in hand. Music creates the rhythm. Cocktails create the pause. Together, they make room for connection.

We explored this relationship more in our earlier post about why cocktails and music have always gone together, but in many ways, that story starts with our name.

Trade Eights isn't just borrowed from jazz.

It's a reminder that the best things in life are rarely experienced alone.

They're shared. One conversation at a time.
